We treat eye injuries in our office almost every day that we’re open (and often when we’re not open if patients use our after hours service). Many of these injuries are what we call ocular foreign bodies. They can cause significant eye pain. An ocular foreign body is basically something that gets into an eye that really shouldn’t be there – things like metal, saw dust, bugs, dirt, grass clippings, etc.
Usually the foreign body is embedded in the ocular tissue and difficult to remove at home. In many cases, an attempt to remove the object at home or the workplace pushes it deeper into the eye and makes things worse.
