The image above shows healthy meibomian glands (the vertical white strips) in the lower lid of a patient. Meibomian glands are responsible for producing the oily component of our tears which prevents evaporation and dry eye symptoms. Thesesecretions also keep our tears from spilling out onto our face (watery eyes).
If Meibomian glands aren’t healthy, one or more of the following symptoms occur:
- Dry eyes (tears evaporate quickly)
- Watery eyes (tears don’t stick to our eyes)
- Blepharitis (red irritated eyes/lids caused by infection in these glands)
