Is It Dangerous To Wear Contact Lenses During The Covid Crisis?
There are two basic risks to wearing contacts in the current covid environment. Both can be easily managed. Here is how you can do that.
- Hand hygiene. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly prior to insertion or removal of your lenses. Use soap and water for this. If you use hand sanitizer and it gets transferred to your contacts, eye irritation will result.
- Consider wearing your glasses in high-risk areas like crowded stores. The covid virus can enter your body through your eye tissues. Health care workers often wear shields in addition to their masks to protect themselves from virus that might come in contact with their eyes. Wearing your glasses can help you mitigate this risk too.
A high percentage of our patients use one-day disposable contact lenses. This lowers the risk of contamination because they are putting in a fresh pair of contacts every day. BUT – they still need to be sure their hands are clean prior to insertion or removal of their lenses.
